CPRE Herefordshire is deeply saddened by the death of David Lovelace, landscape historian, ecologist, and one of the most knowledgeable and generous advocates for the Herefordshire countryside with whom we have had the privilege of working with.

David brought an extraordinary breadth of skill and knowledge to his love of this county. Using digital mapping, aerial photography, LIDAR, and meticulous research, he built up an unparalleled picture of Herefordshire’s landscape; its ancient hedgerows, trees, and forests.  David understood better than almost anyone how much had been lost and how much remained worth protecting.

He worked with us to map ancient hedgerows and intensive poultry units across the county, providing evidence that directly supported our campaigns. That work mattered, and its value will endure.

Beyond his technical contribution, David was a passionate, principled voice for this landscape. He was a founding member of the Herefordshire Tree Network, assisted parish tree wardens in Herefordshire and contributing to the Ancient Tree Forum’s national work.

You can read a fascinating report about Ancient Woodlands and Trees of Herefordshire by David here.

We are grateful for everything he gave to this county’s countryside. He will be greatly missed.

Those who wish to remember David are invited to donate to Norton Canon Village Hall Fund, a cause that was close to his heart and in keeping with his lifelong commitment to community and countryside.
