Hedgerow Heroes returns to Herefordshire this autumn

CPRE Herefordshire has secured funding for a new season of Hedgerow Heroes, it’s hedgerow restoration project, starting this autumn.

Hedgerows are one of the UK’s most valuable wildlife habitats. The UK has lost around half its hedgerow network since the Second World War, and CPRE is campaigning for a 40% increase in hedgerow cover by 2050, in line with recommendations from the Climate Change Committee. Every hedge planted or gapped up through Hedgerow Heroes contributes directly to that target.

Project leaders Andrew and Paul will spend the coming month visiting potential sites across Herefordshire, with new volunteering opportunities in hedge planting and gapping up existing hedges to follow from October.

What volunteers can get involved with this autumn

This season’s volunteering will focus on new hedge planting and gapping up existing hedges across Herefordshire. Dates and site details will be confirmed within the next month or two. Volunteering sessions run 10am – 2pm, all equipment, plus hot drinks and biscuits provided! Make sure you’re signed up to our newsletter to hear the latest (sign up form at the bottom of this page).

Hedgelaying courses starting in October

Alongside the planting and gapping up, CPRE Herefordshire will be running hedgelaying training courses starting in October. These courses teach traditional hedgelaying skills and are for anyone keen to learn the technique properly. Beginners welcome. Full course dates will be announced soon (sign up form at the bottom of this page to find out more).
