A Fond Farewell to Dr Rosalind Bradbury
This month, we pay tribute to Dr Rosalind (Ros) Bradbury, champion of the Herefordshire countryside, who has sadly died at the age of 93.
Ros moved to Kington upon retirement and spent the next 30 years immersed in passionate campaigning for both local and global causes. She joined CPRE Herefordshire in 2001 and quickly became a much-valued volunteer and a key part of our PLAN team.

Long before the River Wye’s decline became headline news, Ros was already raising the alarm. She was one of the first to understand and speak out about the cumulative impact of Intensive Poultry Units (IPUs) on our landscape and waterways – A voice of reason and foresight when few were listening.

Over more than two decades, Ros built up an extraordinary knowledge of planning and environmental issues. She combined this with tireless campaigning, a fierce intellect, dry humour, and a truly boundless heart. Her dedication to the protection of the Herefordshire countryside inspired us all, and her legacy will continue to guide our work.
We are heartened to see a recent success prove Ros right. Last month, the High Court quashed planning permission for a 230,000‑bird IPU near the River Severn, ruling that councils must assess the cumulative environmental impact of such developments, echoing Ros’s long-standing concerns about phosphates and toxic waste. It was as a landmark win for our rivers and a vindication of the path Ros tirelessly championed.
Ros did not live to see the recovery of the River Wye, but her determination continues to strengthen ours. In her memory, we will continue to build data, challenge harmful practices, and push for meaningful, lasting change.
Thank you, Ros. We will miss you deeply, and we will carry on your work.
