Buy local

Counter with fresh vegetables and a sign of local products.

When you buy your food locally, you can know where it comes from and how it’s produced. On top of that, you’re also supporting the local economy and your food will be fresher and have more flavour.

Buying local keeps money circulating within the Herefordshire economy. Data shows that local retailers put 52% of their revenue back into the local economy, compared to just 14% for national, chain retailers. Money circulating through the local economy benefits everyone who is a part of each transaction.

Local food

Buying seasonal ingredients and locally produced food from a neighbourhood source or farmers’ market is a great way to give back to the planet for the following reasons:

  • You’ll be supporting local farmers and producers, cutting the distance your food has travelled, and supporting your local community.
  • Fresh food will be tastier and more flavoursome plus good for your health. There is nothing quite like eating asparagus on the same day it is picked.
  • You’ll also be helping fight climate change by keeping your carbon footprint local.
  • Not only does shopping or buying from local markets reduce waste from packaging, but it also reduces the use of fossil fuels. Food miles not only consume energy, but they contribute to poor air quality.
