Join our Love your Countryside Walk in the Ewyas Harold area
Join CPRE Herefordshire’s free guided walk, led by trustee Paul Lodge, from Ewyas Harold to Dore Abbey is a popular 5.5-mile circular route through the Golden Valley, taking under three hours over gentle terrain on Sunday 20 September 2026.
About This Walk
The walk begins at Ewyas Harold Memorial Hall and climbs onto Ewyas Harold Common before following the scenic Golden Valley near the River Dore towards Dore Abbey. Founded in 1147, Dore Abbey is one of Herefordshire’s most significant medieval buildings. The final leg follows the Dulas Brook Valley back to Ewyas Harold, completing a circular route of around three hours at a gentle pace.
Key Highlights
The route takes in wide views across South West Herefordshire and the Welsh border country, including sight lines to Offa’s Dyke Path – the 177-mile National Trail running along the England-Wales border – as well as the ridge known as the Cat’s Back and the summit of the Skirrid. Ewyas Harold Common itself forms part of England’s common land network, grazed by ponies and rich in wild flora. Nationally, common land covers around 1.3 million acres across England and Wales, and roughly 88% of registered commons carry a wildlife, landscape or archaeological designation. Booking required, see link below.
Accessibility and Dogs
Because the route crosses stiles and brooks, it isn’t possible to accommodate wheelchairs or children’s pushchairs on this walk. Dogs are not allowed to protect the common’s grazing ponies and ground-nesting wildlife.
What to Bring
Sturdy boots, a rucksack, water, snacks, and waterproof clothing in case of inclement weather.
