CPRE’s new report shows our Green Belt is being eroded at an alarming rate, with 460,000 houses planned for land soon to be removed from the Green Belt. The government is failing in its commitment to protect the Green Belt.
The report also shows that, last year, just 28% of homes built on greenfield land within the Green Belt were affordable, so building on the Green Belt is not solving the affordability crisis.
Local authorities with Green Belt land have enough brownfield land for over 720,000 homes – yet our Green Belt is being lost at its fastest rate ever. There are viable alternatives to meet housing need – let’s use them.
