West Midlands Regional Group

The West Midlands CPRE group brings together the five branches in the region, to help them protect the West Midlands countryside.

The removal of the regional layer of governance by the new Government is shifting power down to the local level and also up to Government but that doesn't mean regional issues, such as the balance between urban regeneration and rural renaissance, have gone away.

It is still important to make connections beyond the boundaries of Herefordshire.

CPRE has decided to retain its regional groups. In the West Midlands, regional staff and volunteers will work to compare good practice and challenge inadequacies in Councils and Public and Private Bodies when it comes to protecting the beauty and tranquility of the countryside.

They will want to support branches in their campaigns and help promote national CPRE goals.

New cross-boundary challenges continue to emerge. Local Enterprise Partnership, for example, have been created to support economic growth with Government backing. As well as lobbying they will bid for grants, such as the Regional  Growth Fund, which could have significant impacts - both good and bad - on where development occurs.

The Marches LEP covers Herefordshire, Shropshire and Telford and will require CPRE to engage proactively. We will want to support some of their aspirations but challenge them if they support housing in the wrong place or out-dated road proposals.
