Requiem for an Orchard. Hand made print by Inge Wright

Invasion of Nature by Inge Wright

Hand made prints by Inge Wright

Inge Wright was born in Austria. She received her B.A. degree in Art from the University of Alabama, USA, after a formal education in Germany. On moving to England, Inge taught in Oxfordshire for six years, whilst raising her family. She moved to Herefordshire in the late 1990s, where she was particularly drawn to the beautiful countryside and surrounding area.
Inge exhibits regularly in the UK and overseas, including in America. She works from her studio in Whitney-on-Wye and from The Sidney Nolan Trust’s studio near Presteigne.

Originally trained as a printmaker, she also does mixed media. Her work is influenced by the varied nature surrounding her and her love for animals. The printing process, with its different approaches (solar plate, collagraph, lithograph, etc) gives her the perfect tool to interpret these visual images.

"Requiem for an Orchard" came about when Inge visited the house of Peggy Evans, who was one of the first residents to live around an orchard in Kingsland. This orchard was, at the time of artists visting sites in the county, earmarked for the building of executive homes.

By January 2007, the orchard had been grubbed up & destroyed and the foundations of the buildings were in place.

"The orchard was done in a very realistic and dreamy approach by using the photopolymer etching technique. The surrounding houses to replace it were done as a collagraph, which is a more primitive method suiting the subject."

Invasion of Nature? Invasion of Nature by Inge Wright

When travelling to the Leominster bypass, past Wharton Bank, Inge was astounded at the vast scope of the polytunnels around Brierley.

Her approach to convey this intrusion to the English landscape was to create a collagraph with blind embossing, to emphasize the huge white expanse of these polytunnels.

"This invasion of nature is about polytunnels taking over Herefordshire on a massive scale. I am putting this question to the viewer to answer it themselves. Some won’t mind them, for they extend the growing season, while others will dislike the disruption and interference, which they cause in the British landscape."
