Dinedor Hill and The Relief Road

"I became interested in the site for many reasons, I found it inspiring as an artist and was drawn to it by the majestic presence of the hill, living very close to Dinedor I had the luxury of access to the site at anytime this I felt would give me freedom to do my very best for the job in hand.

My first step in documenting the area was to walk around the hill to gauge which view points would give the most interesting photographs my intention was to highlight the fact this is an area of outstanding beauty.
I decided quite early in the project to embark on a series of “portraits” of the hill and its surrounding landscape that would capture some the character of this beautiful Herefordshire landscape."

"I was taken with the idea the hill was historically the site of Iron Age hill fort I felt this image showed what a formidable position this would be to attack also walking up the hill proved this, when the snow fell it removed much of the detail from reducing the landscape to its strongest features creating a minimal simplicity"

Dinedor Hill from Bartonsham (May 2006)
"This picture is taken twenty yards from my Dinedor hill from Bartonsham, by Jason Hodgesbedroom window; I can hear these cows in the morning as I wake up, the day I took this picture I was returning from a very unsuccessful art and craft show as I was approaching the house I saw this sky still dark from the rain and the sun had just come out and spread a golden light on the ground and illuminating the cows, I had been waiting for this kind atmospheric light for months and here it was, I quickly ran home to get my camera."

Dinedor Hill from Bullinghope (July 2006)Dinedor Hill, by Jason Hodges
"While I was photographing the Church at Bullinghope I followed a public footpath through this field it was taken on a Sunday afternoon in glorious sunshine finding the thistles was an opportunity I couldn’t resist; they made a great compositional device and gave a pastoral feel to the image."

"This is the only enhanced picture in the exhibition, I have played with the colours to add a more painterly feel to the image this was part of a conceptual approach for the project; I was going to produce five versions of the Bullinghope picture starting with the original changing each one in series till the final image was obliterated, this conceptual process was a metaphor for human disruption of the landscape.
In the end I felt that a landscape documentary was more of an honest approach to take, it was only when going through my archive I found I had more than enough suitable material to do this."

Dinedor Hill from Green Crize (August 2006)Dinedor hill from Green Crize, by Jason Hodges
"Landscape has many changing moods and this dark sky created an intense back drop for the hill whilst it was being lit up by the sun, the houses on the slope give an indication of scale and presence of the community spread around the hill.
The picture has a symbolic significance for me as a place of poetical beauty under threat."
