More About CPRE

A Voice for the Countryside

CPRE exists to promote the beauty, tranquillity and diversity of rural England by encouraging the sustainable use of land and other natural resources in town and country. We promote positive solutions for the long term future of the countryside and to ensure change values its natural and built environment. Our Patron is Her Majesty The Queen. We have 57,000 supporters, a branch in every county, eight regional groups, over 200 local groups and a national office in Westminster. Membership is open to all. Formed in 1926, CPRE is a powerful combination of effective local action and strong national campaigning. Our President is Sir Max Hastings. back to top

Keeping England Green

Our work matters because today our countryside is threatened as never before. Huge areas of what William Blake called our 'green and pleasant land' have already been lost in the past half century. In each decade between 1945 and 1990 an area larger than Greater London was lost to make way for urban development. CPRE believes we have a duty to ourselves and to future generations to stop the needless destruction of the countryside. back to top

Working Nationally and Locally

CPRE is widely respected as a forceful campaigning organisation that wins arguments through the quality of our research and the persuasiveness of our ideas. We take the countryside's case to the nation's policymakers. At county, regional and local level, we work to influence planning policy, oppose developments that threaten the countryside, support beneficial change and campaign on rural policy issues. We also work with other voluntary organisations on matters of common interest. For example, we have been recently working with the Civic Trust on ways of regenerating our towns and making them better places to live. back to top

Getting Results

CPRE is an organisation that turns good ideas into action. For example, the Government is increasingly accepting our ideas for protecting the countryside by redeveloping land in towns and cities rather than building on greenfield sites.
We are influencing local authorities to adopt rural transport strategies, including action to protect our country lanes. We are winning the argument for tighter controls over quarrying and opencast mining. Around the country we are also winning a great many local battles to stop rural land being swallowed up by development.
The campaign for our countryside is a continuing battle. With your support, and that of thousands of other people who care about rural England, it's a battle we can win.

CPRE Herefordshire

Herefordshire is still one of England’s more rural counties. Its beautiful countryside interspersed with historic market towns and villages continues to support a traditional way of life. Retaining the character of Herefordshire yet supporting development and growth is about deciding what is appropriate and supporting that and opposing plans which are inappropriate. The Branch Committee work very hard to ensure that our views are heard where it matters – where the decisions are taken.
CPRE has contributed a great deal to Herefordshire over the last 70 years, an achievement that has only been possible because of the support of the membership. All the talk today is of a countryside in crisis, a situation it may be hard to appreciate in Herefordshire but the challenges facing our County today are many, complex and serious. It has never been more important for CPRE to have a large, strong and vocal membership – we need to increase our membership and spread our messages more widely.

Please consider whether you are able to help us do this and if you are interested in ensuring that the CPRE voice is even more effective in helping keep Herefordshire the place that you love and care for, do get in touch
