Book Art by Lin Charlston

Since completing the MA Book Arts at Camberwell College of Arts in 2000, Lin has developed an interdisciplinary approach in her artist's books and installations, using a combination of digital and traditional techniques. Her books are informed by her background in science research and education, and an ongoing study of scientists’ notebooks.

Lin's books have been purchased for public collections including the British Library Modern Collection, Tate Britain, The Wellcome Trust and the Joan Flasch Collection in Chicago.

In 2006 Lin was elected as FRSA (Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts). To be thus elected, one needs to be both of a high professional standing and creative ability.

Lin is also a founder member of the group "Faction", who regularly exhibit in London.Lin Charlston's Book Art, 'Once upon a time there were Hedgerows...'

'Once Upon a Time the were Hedgerows...'

Before making her limited-edition artist's book 'Once upon a time there were hedgerows.....' , Lin visited ancient hedgerows in the Wye Valley and North Herefordshire, read information which is readily available on the internet and also studied the 'Hansard Debates' leading up to and following the 1997 hedgerows legislation.
The edition of 50 hand-bound books 21cm x 21cm is a structural narrative of disappearing hedgerows framed by drawings of the fruiting hedges.Lin Charlston's Book Art on display in the gallery
" The subjective experience of being close to hedges as the season changed seemed so far removed from the facts, figures and arguments in the 'hedgerow debate' that I wanted to bind something of both into the pages of my book" .
